A day in Apokoronas

Huyndai Getz from The Best Car Rentals (www.thebestcars.gr)

Last week I enjoyed a wonderful excursion with my family and I’m happy to share this experience with you.
Means of transport: a Hyundai Getz 2012 model from The Best Car Rentals (www.thebestcars.gr) with two baby-seats (necessary for my little angels).
Departure time: around 9 am
Destination: Apokoronas. North coast, region of Chania
Weather: sunny, as expected, though some clouds appeared in the sky but…. who cares if temperatures are 20-24C.

Driving from Heraclio to Chania on the national road is such a wonderful experience. Mountains on the left, the absolute blue of the sea on the right…. The perfect combination. You just want to stop all the time and take photos of….. everything!
We decided that our first stop would be Kalyves, a seaside traditional village with old stone houses. We walked along the sandy beach (too early for me to swim) and had a quick coffee in the central square of the village. We continued to Almirida, another wonderful seaside village, which became popular after the great development in the real estate sector in that area. Next stop (definitely for lunch) was Vamos. A well preserved village, classed as traditional by the Greek Ministry for Environment. The beauty of this village is the combination of folk and neoclassical architecture. The perfect place to relax was waiting for us. Therefore we continued downhill and arrived in Vrisses, another traditional village with tall trees.  We admired the lush green landscape of the area, the waters and we enjoyed our Greek coffee in the kafenion. And of course some local hand-made yoghurt. Don’t miss it if you have the opportunity to come here during your next stay.

If we were not obliged to return to Heraklio we would have continued to the south towards the plateau of Askifou and certainly Chora Sfakion (surely this will be one of our future destinations). So, time to return…. We passed by Georgiopolis with its looooong sandy beach and the little church of Saint Nikolaos and suddenly… we turn right…. How could we leave the area without visiting the unique and only freshwater Kournas lake in Crete??????

Ok, back home… back to everyday life. What I realized once more is that everywhere in Crete, there are beautiful places worth visiting and a magnificent nature to admire and observe. You can’t continue driving without stops for a short walk, for a coffee; you want to stop and take photos everywhere…. the wild mountains, the local people, the sandy beaches, the sea and the traditional villages, the towns and the cities. This is or Crete, this is your Crete. A miracle of beauties everywhere you drive, everywhere you stop.
Traveling with kids was not a problem at all. Stay tuned for tips & tricks! For the moment let’s think about our next destination. What would you suggest me?????

PS. Thanks to The Best Car Rentals (www.thebestcars.gr) for the wonderful Hyundai Getz, that made our trip really enjoyable. An absolutely safe drive with no problems at all!
